Perge Ancient City
If you are one of those who cannot get enough of traveling to time in the ancient cities of Antalya that smell of history and orange blossoms, let’s start telling you about our next city: Perge!
The city, which is located 18 km east of Antalya, on the borders of Aksu district, is located on the ancient road that starts in Bergama and ends in Side. The Aksu (Kestros) River was an element that made the geographical position of the city very valuable. During its period, it maintained its importance for a long time in terms of making the soil fertile and providing urban transportation. The importance of the city to the river can be understood from its coins, reliefs and the statue of the River God in the monumental fountain at the foot of the Acropolis.
Perge, which is considered among the most orderly Roman cities of all Anatolia since the 1st century AD, is among the ancient cities worth seeing.
The Macedonian king, Alexander the Great, sent his army from Lycia to Pamhylia, who followed the coastline with his close commanders to Perge. According to research, since no source mentions a battle between the city of Perge and the Macedonian army, it is thought that the city surrendered to Alexander the Great without a fight.
As a result of the excavations in Perge, which is considered to be one of the most orderly Roman cities of all Anatolia since the 1st century AD, important finds were obtained and all these were transferred to the Antalya Museum. We recommend you to stop by the Antalya Museum, which is among the richest Roman Period sculpture museums in the world.
After Alexander the Great took the city, he built city walls with stones of half a ton each. It is estimated that there were no walls protecting the city as the reason why the Pergeans gave the city to Alexander without resisting at all. You can start your tour of the ancient city by walking along these monumental city walls.
Witness the beauty of the mosaics belonging to the Roman Period in the ancient city of Perge.
Do not leave the ancient city of Perge without seeing the water channel, the colonnaded street, the watchtower, the Roman bath, agoras, shops with double doors, the monumental theater with a capacity of 12 thousand people, the mosaics covering the floor and the horseshoe-shaped stadium.
